One Open WiMAX
Unlike traditional wireless infrastructure, many industries like IP networking, computing, and enterprise wireless have significantly benefited from the flexibility offered by open interfaces. It has proven to become the main catalyst for rapid innovation and value generation in the markets place, eventually benefiting the entire ecosystem and the end customers. With its roots in IEEE and IP, WiMAX brings the same promise of openness and modularity to the wireless telecommunications infrastructure and is poised to provide the huge benefits that the other open and modular industries have been reaping.
For service providers to pick best-of-breed WiMAX infrastructure pieces and mix and match quickly to build very cost effective and differentiated WiMAX networks, these pieces need to seamlessly interoperate. One Open WiMAX initiative has accelerated compliance of infrastructure equipment to WiMAX Forum NWG specifications and has created a complete end-to-end eco-system composed of modular pieces, such that service providers don’t have to worry about vendor lock-ins.
The goals of enabling One Open WiMAX ecosystem are:
- Make WiMAX successful by bringing products to market with open infrastructure interfaces defined by the WiMAX Forum NWG group
- Accelerate the availability of various interoperable WiMAX infrastructure pieces for the service providers to consider earlier in their decision process
- Converge to one mandatory WiMAX profile and enable continued private interoperability testing
