Pico & Femto
Pico and femtocell technologies hold the promise of cost-effective ubiquitous coverage for broadband wireless technologies such as WiMAX and LTE. This model calls for lower-power, lower-cost base station designs similar to WiFi Access Points (WAPs) that can be deployed in buildings. Traffic from these devices can then be backhauled over existing broadband connections. While the cost efficiencies are compelling, many technical issues need to be resolved to make this deployment model a reality. Issues include:

  • Efficient management and provisioning of a large number of smaller base stations
  • Security of traffic travering backhaul links and public networks
  • Spectral and mobility management to minimize interface and coordinate handovers
  • Open standards to enable plug-and-play deployment models and enable the ecosystem

WiChorus has developed advanced gateway solutions that are ideally suited to tackle these unique requirements.
